From the Rutland House School for Parents.
A school for parents
A School for Parents is a place where the parents of pre-school children can, receive support, information, and training which will help them, work effectively with their child, specially trained staff assist parents to understand the difficulties faced by young children and devise strategies to
encourage the development of basic skills such as sitting, standing. Listening, looking, touching, eating and playing. The School for Parents supports a large number of families through their weekly session, Gym club sessions and Summer school blocks from, across the country.
Philosophy
The philosophy of a School for Parents places the parents at the forefront of their child's education. This encourages the development of the child's personality alongside the mother or father, enhancing the growth of a positive relationship.
This philosophy, which is inspired by the methods of Conductive Education developed at the International Peto Institute in Budapest, enables professionals to work as partners with parents, encouraging them to realise their natural ability to aid their own child's development.
Peto-inspired work awakens and stimulates children's self-awareness, and their capacity to play and enjoy life. Working in a group allows both parents and children to share this learning experience.
Organisation
The children are grouped according to their age: the youngest group is aged 4-15 months, the middle group 15 months - 3 years and the oldest group 3-5 years. Parents and children work together in groups, supporting and motivating one another.
The School for Parents Session
The week is divided into daily sessions running for a full or half day. These learning sessions provide a range of carefully structured programmes to enable children to achieve their full potential. In addition we also have limited use of the school swimming pool to promote water confidence and self help skills. All learning is based on the 'Early learning Coals' set out by the Department for Education and Employment for pre-school education.
A school for parents
We offer families a range of services and support. The staff includes a trained Counsellor / Advocate. The staff support parents and may arrange visits home when this is considered helpful to the family. During the more relaxed parts of the day, parents can talk informally with one another. Families also receive advice about other support agencies and voluntary organisations.
The School for Parents Network
Rutland House School is part of the national network of schools for parents, which aims to bring philosophy of Conductive Education to more families in their local area. The network is supported by the International Peto Institute in Budapest. It provides support and regular training for all School for Parents staff.
